A few week ago I wrote about Omegle, one of my favorite web application for its simple and stupid yet effective UI. Here is a Facebook application that is also based on the concept of stranger chatting but way smarter than Omegle.

GettingRandom is one more ‘time waster’ like Omegle and a cool dating medium that harnesses the power of Facebook demographics. You can choose to chat by gender (ie. talk to guys or girls). Because this is a application built on the Facebook platform, it has access to profile data that helps make for better matches between chatting partners - whether by age, gender, location or interests.
The two chatters are still strangers to each other, but it can try to find optimal chatting partners thanks to Facebook profile data. “Currently, we match based on gender; soon, we will be offering the ability to filter by location (ie. same country, same city; choose to chat with someone in Italy, etc.) and even by interesting activity-like chat with someone who’s also passionate about tennis.” said Bob Chandra, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and founder of GettingRandom.
A primary way in which GettingRandom differs from other stranger chat, is that this Facebook application is used a lot for dating chat. This app also lets you use a auto-translating service in case you need it.
As per Bob, “The idea is to create the best possible environment for chat and not let a few spammers/abusers ruin the experience for everyone.” Time will tell. What’s your experience so far?
