Do you feel your Gmail account is being accessed by someone without your permission? Are you noticing some strange activities going on but confused as to who is doing that or what to do? Well if you are using Gmail as your email client then you can easily check if someone is trying to compromise your account. Follow these simple steps -

  1. Once you are logged into Gmail go to the page footer and you will find a line that says: “Last account activity: 15 minutes ago at this IP (xx.xx.xx.xxx).” with a link ‘Details’.
  2. Gmail Screenshot 1

  3. Click on the ‘Details’ link. A pop up window should open.
  4. Gmail Screenshot 2

  5. Inside the pop up window you will get to know:
    • Currently apart from you if anyone else is logged into your email account.
    • Are there any sessions which are still open.
This is particularly helpful if you have logged into the Gmail account from a public computer and forgot to log out. Unlike Yahoo mail Gmail doen’t log you out of the system. In the same window you will get a button “Sign out all other sessions”. Click on that button and Gmail will log you out from all possible computers where your session is alive.
    • Recent activity block:
This block details the last 5 login informations to your Gmail account including Access Type, IP Address and Date/Time. Check the info carefully. This is where you will be able to check if some unauthorized access to your account is happening or not.

Check the Recent Activity block for any malicious activity

Say you use browser to access Gmail. In the Access Type column if you see Mobile phone instead then you can safely conclude that someone accessed the account without your permission and might hack your Gmal and Google account. Similarly IP address and time of access can also give you a hint of whats going on.

In case you find anything fishy:

  1. Click on the “Sign out all other sessions” button.
  2. Login again and change your Google Account password and secret question asap. And incase your Gmail account or Google account gets hacked or compromised fill out this form to contact the Google support team.
