August 5, 2007 under Reviews

Well heres a fascinating news for Indian musicians. CASIO, as part of their expansion plans in India has launched a keyboard that is stuffed with a wide range of Indian tones just to suit your needs! And guess what .. it costs just under Rs. 12000 (USD 300).

Till now most of the keyboards available in India are specially made to suit the needs of US market. Or in other words, the default tones that we get are piano, organs, harmonica, strings, etc. plus auto accompaniments like hip hop, club, dance, pop, jazz, etc. Of course very few Indian tones like Sitar, Santoor, etc. are also available in some ranges. Few keyboardists (pro level) additionally purchases Wave Expansion Board like Music Asia to suit their needs.

But Casio CTK 810IN comes with an array of Indian tones like Sitar, Santoor, Tabla, Harmonium, Sarod, Tanpura as default tones plus a wide range of auto accompaniment rhythms including Bangra, Dadra, Garba, Keharwa, Dandiya, Teen taal, Bhajan. This 61 key keyboard is also equipped with equipped with SD memory card slot, pitch bender and USB interface along with touch response keys and 32 registration memory features.

Are there any current hindi film song rythms that are available on SD memory cards that we can use while playing hindi songs on the Casio CTK 180in. Are there any software companies that do this sort of rythms for this keyboard?

I have this keyboard, and I must say it’s amazing! It’s very difficult for me to go to sleep now; I feel like playing it all day long.

It can reproduce the sounds of a variety of instruments, and the Indian tones sound good, specially the Santoor, Robab, Flute, Sarod and Sarangi. There are times when I practise with songs playing on the Home Theatre; the sound quality of the keyboard is just like that of the Home Theatre. Very impressive. This is my second keyboard from Casio. (I had a smaller one earlier as a child, and I used it for 13 years until a cousin spoilt it)

The quality of the tones and the rhythm/accompaniment is impressive!
