Hide multiple email addresses using Undisclosed Recipients option

December 9, 2006 under Email Tips

I get a lot of emails from my college friends and colleagues which are funny, interesting, informative and worth sharing. These emails get circulated among a whole lot of others I don’t know. Like I got an email that contained some funny pictures of George Bush which already got circulated among 500 friends.

The mail was forwarded from one guy to another and so on. If I was a spammer I would have been delighted to see so many email ids ;) and I would have started bombarding the mail boxes with spam mails. So I wonder are the email addresses worth sharing too? I don’t think so.

How to undisclose (hide) the email recipients (addresses)?

  1. Open your email program (like Outlook Express) or login to your free mail account (like Gmail, Yahoo mail, etc.) and go to compose mail to create a new mail message.
  2. Type ‘Undisclosed Recipients’ followed by your <email address> (include braces) in the ‘To’ field.
  3. This should look like: ‘Undisclosed Recipients‘ <your_email_address@example.com>
  4. Enter the email addresses of friends to whom you want to send the email seperated by commas/semicolons in the ‘BCC‘ field.
  5. This should look like: friend1@example.com, friend2@example.com, friend3@example.com
  6. Now compose your message and click on ’send’.
  7. The bottom line: Protect yourself and your friends from spammers.

The output will look like this:

Really helpful tips as I was not aware of how to make use of the undisclosed recipients option :) . Can you please tell where is the BCC option in my Outlook Express?

Thanks in advance

Well I am in school and I too get lots of mails which we forward to the. This is really cool. From now on I won’t be disclosing all the mail ids while forwarding as I used to do …

Lets stop helping spammers!!

Anusree on April 18, 2007

I have tried several times but it doesn’t work. there is a warning message that it’s not the right sentence to type

Anusree on April 18, 2007

I can’t use for hotmail

That’s an awesome tip -and- with a few easy tweaks, it also works with Thunderbird (an open source mail software).

Thanks for sharing the tech “how to” details ; )

where is the BCC option in gmail

Ken NIMBIN on August 16, 2008

This is an excellent tip for anyone who needs to send emails to members of a club or association - you can put together the BCC list in Word etc and not have a long list of “To” for all to see

kevinATLANTA on September 18, 2008

The above is too many steps. Simply open the BCC field in your email address section and click on the contacts in your addressbook and that’s it. Of course, you must type your email and click Send. The BCC field is automatically undisclosed.

Well the Undisclosed_Recipients thing works BUT it places YOUR e-mail address in the “Undisclosed-Recipients” and when clicked it shows yoru address…Not a problem becasue it is coming from you anyway..BUT I hav eseen some Undisclosed-Recipients that , when clicked, show NO attached e-mail address…. hummmmm and I did not include a valid e-mail becasue most site are not trustworthy enough….

When using Earthlink as an ISP and Outlook Express - I get an error message when I try to put any address in the BCC field. This occurs when I have an address in the TO field or when I don’t. IN fact as long as I have the BCC field displayed, Outlook Express refuses to send any email for me and gives me an error message (which I’ve looked up online and apparently this is a common problem with Earthlink as an ISP)

maggie on July 2, 2009

When using the “Undisclosed recipients” format you suggested to use, I keep getting the email sent to myself as well. How can i stop this?

Thanks!

Ronny on July 4, 2009

@maggie: that’s not possible.

Dear Folks, The ‘Undisclosed Recepient’ is a good thing to know about, however, If you have an email that needs to be sent to 50 of your pals and you dont want other pals know, who those 50 pals are, you can simply type all the email addresses in the box and click send.. That’s it.. The recepients wouldn’t know, how many emails addresses you had opted for - Subbu Hyderabadi (subrahmanyaam@gmail.com)

Cristy on July 17, 2009

Ronny-yes it is possible. The way were told do this here, it DOES send it back to your own email address!

Ronny on July 23, 2009

@Cristy: I am not disagreeing; rather I am saying that its not possible to stop sending the mail back to your own email address.

Carlos Vazquez on November 17, 2009

Thanks a lot for your tip, now I can send many emails without wondering if any spammer out there is going to get the addressees for devious purposes.

Hi the Profressor,

How can I hide my email address in the TO field, and just let all my recipients see only the 2 words “undisclosed recipients” but not my email address ?

Thanks in advance
Wei

a nice one…tanqqq

Umair on April 27, 2011

Fool..
This is not the way… One can easily get your email address by double click on text “Undisclosed Recipients” your email address will appear to him.
Tell me the way through which Undisclosed Recipients appears instead of email address on clicking.

Tacoslammer on August 19, 2011

Umair and others:
If you try to send an email to yourself (test purposes, etc) and you enter your email address in the “To” field, it shows up as “Undisclosed Recipients”. Not cool! So how do you send an email to yourself without it showing up with the name of “Undisclosed Recipients” ???

Ros on August 29, 2011

But Norton Internet Security is showing it as a SPAM.

deepimage on August 31, 2011

To create undisclosed list of recipients in gmail with the to field only showing undisclosed-recipients and no email address:

1) Leave the “To:” field empty
2) Write all target email addresses (separated by comma and space) in the BCC field
3) Send

Now, each recipient will see only the sender’s address and “To” will read “undisclosed-recipients”

Gaurav on September 2, 2011

No its not working, its not showing ‘Undisclosed Recipients‘ at the receiver end, showing my name in to filed and remove ‘Undisclosed Recipients‘

reza on November 20, 2011

It’s a fool. If you keep cursor above ‘Undisclosed Recipients‘, then you will see email address.
