Feel lucky with Firefox and Google

I love Firefox I am too lazy when it comes to remembering urls. This has been a negative aspect of mine for quite sometime now. One day(~ 2 years ago) I forgot the url of the overture keyword selector tool (a necessity for every web marketeer I guess) !! I needed to show something to my boss and he kept on waiting staring at me. I thought about the last resort. Yep, try Google. But by mistake and instead of going to google.com, I typed inventory and overture in the navigation bar (thats what I remembered). And then I discovered landing up here. It was awesome! The result is similar to the one I would have got if I opted to use the I am feeling lucky feature of google. The firefox navigation bar got me lucky and saved my day.

From then on I use this feature and it saves my time a lot. So I dont need to remember things by heart so much. I do manage to remember some specific keywords just as I explained before, type them in the navigation bar and then Go. Sry I am sharing this after such a long time. Give it a try now and see the result for yourself ;).

How to Publish a Post in advance (Wordpress)

Publish your wordpress blog posts in advance One of my friends was leaving the city for a month. So he was worried because his blog wont be updated on a regular basis once he leaves. He told me that he has a group of dedicated readers as well as unique visitors visiting his weblog. And since he wont be able to update his blog, he feared that he will be loosing a percentage of readers. He asked me for a solution. I thought ..
  • A good way to handle this situation is to make a small post to let the readers/visitors know that the blogger will be out of the city for a month.
  • A better solution is to Pre Publish your blog posts.

Is your site colorful enough to the color blinds?

Google logo after deuteranope simulation - http://vischeck.com/

Color blindness in humans is the inability to perceive differences between some or all colors that other people can distinguish. It is most often of genetic nature, but might also occur because of eye, nerve, or brain damage, or due to exposure to certain chemicals.

Source: http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness

We do wish to design our websites in the best possible way we can imagine. We choose colors, spend time in improving the layouts, carefully build the navigation system, blah, blah. The main objective is to fulfill the needs of our visitors and make them feel comfortable and happy. But .. do we ever ask ourselves what our sites might appear to the people who are colorblinds? Do we take care of this aspect? (Till now I didn’t though I do try to use web-safe colors as much as possible). Dont get shocked to think that a certain percentage of your site’s visitors are colorblinds. I wonder how many websites in the world is built to suit the needs of these people. Today while surfing the net I found these online tools to see what my site might look like to the colorblinds. I was surprised. Note what the Google logo looks to people having Deuteranope (a form of red/green color deficit). Check your site through this wonderful online tool. Once you enter the url of your website it simulates the elements, saves them in its own server and then displays it to you. And …… BANG !! (Some useful Photoshop Plug-Ins for Windows and MAC OSX and OS 9 are also available for download.) Hope these tools come to ‘our’ help and let us try to do something for the colorblinds too. Yes we can do something, something that might help the present and future generation of web designers? Please share your thoughts ..

Javascript webpage preloader

javascript preloader for webpages

While surfing the internet we often notice webpages taking quite a while to load. The time in many cases exceeds what you might have anticipated or what you might have wished to be. Say for example the header image gets loaded, then comes the left menu, body, adverts, external widgets and so on. This happens not only for the big sites but also for small sites, weblogs too.

The reasons in almost all cases are the usage of too many advertisements, external widgets, external content, heavy images, maps, etc. and these are pretty common these days. Lets do something (very simple yet useful) for this problem. Lets design a Java Script preloader for these webpages which will terminate once the loading of the webpage is complete (100%) ! This preloader can be used for the whole website or for a particular webpage.

NOTE: We have implemented the preloader in our site too and you may see it in action in the top right-hand corner of every page.

is your friend really offline?

We often find few of our friends appear offline for months in our yahoo messenger though in reality they might be hiding their messenger status from us i.e. appear invisible!! Who knows he or she might be avoiding us for some reason or the other. And we are getting fooled! Once this thing happened to me and I kept on guessing what might be wrong.

And then came the ALL NEW YAHOO homepage. I kept on discovering the new Y! homepage and found a great way to see if someone is really offline in the yahoo messenger or just hiding from me. My friends were stunned to get my ims though they might have thought they appear invisible ;) to everyone!! Some of them have asked me how I digg up invisible users. Heres how I do it ………
